Good read.

I have everything set up to paywall but I haven't turned it on.

Why are you waiting?

Expand full comment

I guess I'm not ready for it.

I haven't ironed out a strategy.

I don't have enough content yet.

Mentally I don't feel ready.

You’ll never be ready, just start and then you can polish it later as you get feeback from your audience :)

Yes you're probably right…

I'm in my head about it!

Need help?

Only if you can convince me I'm ready haha!

Everyone wants rent. Pay us whether you use our service consistently or not. I am resisting. I will make one time contributions to those who do a good job. I will very occasionally subscribe to those who consistently provide a high volume of excellent material but I refuse to join the new feudalism where most become renting serfs. If the powers that be could get us to rent chairs they would.

The Philosophy Quotes Substack has a “Buy me a coffee” which allows for a one time contribution. I just did this there.

Yes, that’s something you could use

Here’s an exercise in paranoia—maybe: I wonder if producers’ desire to have everything connected to the Internet has something to do with the new feudalism. It makes absolutely no sense to be able to turn a dishwasher on remotely (and it’s a security risk). One can’t put the dishes or the soap in remotely. Connectivity might make sense though if the powers that be want to be able to brick your dishwasher because you’re not paying them a monthly fee. –– CMJ

There! A lot of others think like you, so we need to have something covering that need too :)

My AuDHD brain 🧠 gets so overwhelmed with LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Substack and that’s without all the other ‘stuff’ floating around in my brain 🧠🙄😩

Writing might help?

Expand full comment

Thank you, I think writing and purging would be cathartic and helpful. I could then theoretically go back and edit and share 🥴😬🤷‍♀️

Yes you could :) Thanks, Bianca!

The What and Why for free, and the How for paid. I really must remember that. I think I need to reword my articles with that in mind.

It works for me very well :)

I've been dabbling in it, giving every second post for free. But I may do as you recommend and paywall everything.

Expand full comment

More paywalled posts = more money :) It’s not about free vs. paid posts, but more about free vs paid content, meaning how much and what you leave for free in your paid posts :)

Expand full comment

Thanks for this advice. I've seen others say differently, but leaving the HOW behind a paywall makes a lot of sense--pay for the solution.

Expand full comment

Exactly :) That’s what works for me best

Love to hear your thoughts on the no of free posts vs paid. I see a lot of people doing one free per month now and the rest paywalled / partial paywall, which is what I've been doing.

On a long trip to York today so will enjoy dipping into your archive :) Look forward to having a chat

Hi Nika, I’d say that really depends on the niche and format of the newsletter. As a general rule what I’ve come to conclusion is that more emails = more money. Not necessarily paid emails ;)

Love that quote: Paywall the HOW.

Works every time 🤗

Thank you for breaking this down. I haven't put a paywall yet, but I will soon once I start creating the bottom of the funnel content.

Great! I’m curious how this goes :) we keep in touch

Yes. I'll be messaging you soon about the thing we're working on.

feeling this vibe. we launched our paid less than two weeks ago and have 83 epic members to our network so far. Best decision we've made. Was hesistant, due to the "lie" you mentioned, as we were experiencing fast growth and I didnt want to curb it - but the good news is, exactly as you've stated- the vibes remain strong, growth is on a continued solid streak, and we are connecting with the RIGHT people who want to be a part of the movement we are creating. Thanks for continuing to share epic ideas. You are definitely on my virtual substack "board of advisors" #keepspittingthefire
